Freshman Service Project
As freshmen, you will participate in the Freshmen Service Project—an 8-week program that is very similar to CWSP. This project will be included in your Religion grade and all of the following steps must be completed on time in order to register for the following school year:
Step #1: Choose a service session.
There are 3 sessions per year and each session is 8 weeks long. Each freshman will participate in ONE session. The “Freshmen Service Preference Survey” will allow you to rank your top choices for session and day of the week. Your first choices are not guaranteed, but Ms. Bologa will do her best to work around your schedule. Make sure you let her know if you have any concerns or possible time conflicts.
Step #2: Attend your orientation.
Each session begins with a group orientation. At this afterschool meeting you will receive your journal, which contains all the information you need about your site placement, program expectations, and other important details. You will also be given any paperwork that needs to be completed for the agency. Finally, you will have a chance to meet the other freshmen at your site, so that you can plan to travel together each week.
Step #3: Serve.
You will return to the same site, on the same day, at the same time for SIX weeks.
All service sites are afterschool programs within a 15-minute walk of Cristo Rey. They include Gads Hill Center, Hogar del Niño, Chicago Commons Guadalupano Center, El Valor, and the Boys & Girls Club in Pilsen. There will always be at least 2 students going to each site each day, so you will never have to travel alone. After walking over when school is dismissed and completing your service, you may leave straight from your site (your parents can pick you up or you can take the train/bus, but you do not have to return to CR when you are done).
Each week you will also log your hours online using the "Freshmen Service Hour Submission" form online.
Step #4: Attend your reflection meeting.
After completing 6 weeks of service, all of the freshmen in your session will come together for a large group gathering after school. There will be time for individual reflection, small group sharing, and large group processing. At this meeting, you will also turn in your signed time logs.
